Skincare Myths! #stayalert
Hi Beauties! 💖
It’s your glam team here from My Beauty Squad, and today we’re tackling something that’s been on our minds (and likely yours) for a while—skincare myths. With the flood of beauty advice on social media, it’s easy to fall into the trap of trying every new product or routine that promises a glowing complexion. But let’s be real, not everything you hear or see online is worth the hype. So, we’re here to set the record straight and help you avoid wasting time, money, and energy on things that just don’t work.
Myth #1: "Natural" products are always better
We totally get it—who doesn’t love the idea of slathering on some fresh, all-natural ingredients and expecting glowing results? But here’s the thing: just because something is natural doesn’t mean it’s automatically good for your skin. For instance, lemon juice is often hailed as a miracle cure for acne or dark spots, but it can actually irritate your skin and cause more harm than good. Instead, trust ingredients that have been dermatologist-tested. Many lab-created ingredients are safe, effective, and deliver the results we’re after without the irritation.
Myth #2: You can shrink your pores
Raise your hand if you’ve ever tried a product because it promised to “shrink your pores.” 🙋 We’ve been there too! The truth is, your pore size is determined by your genetics, and no topical product can physically shrink them. What you can do, however, is keep your pores clean and clear to minimize their appearance. Regular exfoliation and using products with ingredients like salicylic acid can help keep those pores looking refined and less noticeable.
Myth #3: Expensive products = Better results
We’re all guilty of thinking that the pricier a product is, the better it must be, right? But the truth is, you don’t need to break the bank to have glowing, healthy skin. Many drugstore products are just as effective (if not more!) than high-end brands. It’s all about the ingredients. For example, a simple moisturizer with hyaluronic acid from the drugstore can work wonders without the fancy price tag. It’s about finding what works for your skin, not your wallet.
Myth #4: Oily skin doesn’t need moisturizer
This is a myth we hear all the time, and it couldn’t be further from the truth! Oily skin can still be dehydrated. Skipping out on moisturizer can actually cause your skin to produce more oil to compensate for the dryness. Opt for lightweight, oil-free moisturisers or gel-based ones that hydrate without clogging pores.
Myth #5: You only need sunscreen on sunny days
If there’s one thing we at My Beauty Squad want to scream from the rooftops, it’s this: Wear. Your. Sunscreen. Every. Day! Even if it’s cloudy, even if it’s winter, and even if you’re indoors most of the day. UV rays can penetrate windows and clouds, and they’re one of the biggest culprits behind premature aging and skin damage. So do your future self a favour and slather on that SPF daily.
So, What Actually Works?
Now that we’ve debunked a few of the biggest myths, let’s talk about what does work. Stick with a simple routine that includes:
Cleansing: A gentle cleanser that suits your skin type is key.
Moisturizing: Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate! Even oily skin needs moisture.
Sunscreen: Every. Single. Day. Without fail.
Exfoliation: Once or twice a week to slough off dead skin and keep your complexion fresh.
Remember, skincare doesn’t have to be complicated to be effective. Less is often more when it comes to your skin’s health.
At My Beauty Squad, we believe in empowering you to feel beautiful in your own skin, and that starts with knowing what works for you. We hope this helped clear up some confusion around skincare myths, and if you’ve got any other beauty questions, you know where to find us. 😉
